Half-day excursion: World War I
Departure & arrival: tourist office Newport Beach and tram stop Newport city (Nieuwpoort Stad)
The Yser front tour gives a contemporary and comprehensible impression of what happened during the Battle of the Yser between the cities of Newport and Dixmude in 1914. Both words and sightings allow us to build a bridge between the present and the past. We relive the inundation from the locks in Newport and then follow the actual front line the “Frontzate” alongside the Yser with stops in Pervijze and Tervate. In Dixmude, we take a walk in the ‘Trench of Death’ leading into the ‘Mouse Trap’, giving us an instant ‘feeling’ of the impending menace of World War I. We eventually end our trip in Vladslo, where the magnificent sculptures and the story of Käthe Kollowitz remind us of the human suffering during the Great War.
Yser front tour: €23 p.p. (€20 < 12y.)
