Lo, historic and nostalgic polder town
Excursion (4 hours): history & local gastronomy in Lo and visit of the world-famous biscuit factory Jules Destrooper.
Departure & arrival: tourist office Newport Beach and tram stop Newport city (Nieuwpoort Stad)
The historic town Lo, situated in the lovely polders of “bachten de kupe”, immerses us in beautiful picturesque sights, which originated in the Middle Ages. At the Western Gate, one of the few remaining city gates and defensive towers in West Flanders, we listen to the legend of the immemorial Caesar’s Tree.
Less obvious, but not less impressive, is the monument the Pigeon Tower, with its 1132 holes a status symbol from 1710.
The city of Lo has furthermore, for more 130 years’ been the home of the renowned biscuits of Jules Destrooper. In the visitor’s centre we get the chance to travel through the abundant history of the biscuit factory. Here, we hear everything there is to know about the traditional family recipes and about the current production. We eventually end our trip with a tasting of the entire gamma of delicious biscuits and a yummy coffee!
